1.0  SUMMARY

This is Release 3A of the TOPS-20 monitor.  Its function is to provide
the  necessary  support  functions  to  allow  all  other TOPS-20 user
software to do useful work.

2.0  EXTERNAL CHANGES

Release 3A supports Tree Structured Directories,  Account  Validation,
the  Usage  JSYS  and  the new Accounting format, support for 2780 and
3780 termination and emulation on non 2020, and integration of ARPANET
and DECSYSTEM-2020 support as an option of the standard monitor.

Release 3A supports the DX20/TX02 magnetic tape controller as well  as
TU70's,  TU71's, and TU72's.  MOS memory support is available with the
2060 version of TOPS20.  Also, DECNET  support,  via  a  DN20,  is  an
available option.



3.0  KNOWN BUGS AND DEFICIENCIES

The known restrictions and deficiencies are documented in the  TOPS-20
beware file (TOPS20.BWR).

4.0  INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS


4.1  Files Needed to Run TOPS-20

4.2  Instructions for Loading and Installing TOPS-20

Mount the tape labeled  Distribution  Tape  on  MTA0:   and  type  the
following commands:

     R DUMPER
     TAPE MTA0:
     REWIND
     DENSITY 1600-BPI
     SKIP 2
     RESTORE <*>MON*.EXE (TO) <SYSTEM>*.*.-1
     REWIND


4.3  Files Needed to Build TOPS-20

The files needed to  build  TOPS-20  are  described  in  the  document
BUILD.MEM.


4.4  Instructions for Building TOPS-20

Refer to BUILD.MEM for detailed instructions for building  the  TOPS20
Monitors.


4.5  Special Considerations

Given  the  large  number  of  configuration  options  (e.g.,  DECNET,
ARPANET, 2060), one should take special care in tailoring and building
a monitor to insure that the selected parameter settings to produce  a
consistent  monitor.   Read  BUILD.MEM  carefully  before attempting a
monitor build.
