1.0  SUMMARY

FORMAT provides the mechanism for formatting  and/or  verifying  RP04,
RP05  or  RP06  disk  packs  that  are  configured  to RH20's.  FORMAT
produces a pack in the identical format to one that was created  using
the  diagnostic,  "DDRPI".  FORMAT runs during timesharing only, while
"DDRPI" can FORMAT in STAND-ALONE mode only.

FORMAT Version 5(0) runs on TOPS20 Release 5.

FORMAT is documented in the TOPS-20 Operators Guide.



2.0  EXTERNAL CHANGES

There are no external changes for Release 5.



3.0  KNOWN BUGS AND DEFICIENCIES

FORMAT can not be run under batch.  Multiple copies of FORMAT can  not
be run.  WHEEL or Operator PRIV are required to run FORMAT.



4.0  Installation and Build Instructions


4.1  Files Needed to Run FORMAT

FORMAT consists of one file, FORMAT.EXE


4.2  Instructions for Loading and Installing FORMAT

Mount the tape  labled  Installation  Tape  on  MTA0:   and  type  the
following commands:

     SKIP MTA0:5 FILES
     R DUMPER
     TAPE MTA0:
     REWIND
     DENSITY 1600-BPI
     SKIP 1
     RESTORE <*>FORMAT.EXE (TO) <SUBSYS>*.*.-1
     REWIND

4.3  Files Needed to Build FORMAT

FORMAT is built from the following file:

     FORMAT.MAC

In addition, the following file must be on SYS:

     MONSYM.UNV


4.4  Instructions for Building FORMAT

Mount the tape  labled  Distribution  Tape  on  MTA0:   and  type  the
following commands:

     R DUMPER
     TAPE MTA0:
     REWIND
     DENSITY 1600-BPI
     SKIP 1
     RESTORE <*>*.*.* (TO) <self>*.*.*
     REWIND
     ^C
     SUBMIT FORMAT.CTL/TIME/UNIQ:0/RES

6.0  SUGGESTIONS

FORMAT is a privileged program that makes  use  of  TOPS20  diagnostic
interface,  DIAG.  One should exercise extreme caution if modifying or
patching FORMAT.
