TLK IS AN UNSUPPORTED PROGRAM, AND IS NOT INCLUDED AS
AN EXAMPLE TO BE FOLLOWED AS IT DOES NOT MEET THE PROTOCOL
REQUIREMENTS SET FORTH BY THE FORMAL DECNET TLK
SPECIFICATION. IN ADDITION, IT HAS ONLY BEEN TESTED IN
CONJUNCTION WITH RSX-11M, RSX-11D, AND IAS. IT HAS BEEN
INCLUDED ON THE SWSKIT AS IT MAY SERVE AS A USEFUL
(UNSUPPORTED) DEMO, NETWORK TEST, OR SAMPLE OF NETWORK
CODING, BUT SHOULD BE USED WITH CAUTION.

The TLK program is a very simple minded routine to
interface into the TLK/LSN utilities supplied on other
DECnet systems. This version of TLK does the job of both
TLK and LSN. The interface into the TLK/LSN dialogue is of
such simplicity that any valid message over the LSN
connection will be printed upon the controlling terminal's
printer or display without regard as to the source or
destination terminal address specified in the connect data.

In order to run the TLK program the user must be
ENABLEd OPERATOR or WHEEL BECAUSE the SRV: side of the
TLK/LSN pair opens a non-zero object type (reference
DECnet-20 manual). Once TLK has started and opened the
server side of the TLK/LSN pair, TLK will ask what node you
wish to start your dialogue. Note that it does not ask for
a terminal identification as it ALWAYS connects to the
Console Terminal (terminal # -1) ON THE OTHER END. The
prompt will be:

HOST NAME FOR SEND:

After giving the above prompt, TLK will prompt will
with:

TLK>

At this time you may type any message you wish, ended by a
<CR>. If at any time you wish to change systems to
communicate with, type Control-E (^E) at the TLK prompt.
This will cause the program to cycle up to the Host prompt
and you may repeat the cycle.

The following is a short example of using the TLK
program to talk to yourself

BY USING YOUR OWN SYSTEM AS HOST NAME:
