EXECUTION INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE AS THE SYSTEM DEMO PACKAGE AT
SOFTWARE INSTALLATION TIME:

(FOR DETAILED OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS REFER TO THE
DECSYSTEM-20 SOFTWARE INSTALLATION GUIDE, DEC-20-XSIGA-A-D).

AFTER THE MONITOR HAS BEEN INSTALLED AND ALL THE STEPS IN
THE INSTALLATION GUIDE THROUGH AND INCLUDING CHAPTER 6 HAVE
BEEN SUCCESSFULLY PERFORMED, THE DEMO PACKAGE MAY BE RUN AS
FOLLOWS:

1. LOG IN AT A USER TERMINAL AS

                EXERCISER

        PASSWORD: EXERCISER

        ACCOUNT NUMBER: (ANY 5 DIGITS)

2. DELETE AND EXPUNGE ALL FILES IN <EXERCISER>

3. COPY <EXERCISER-LIBRARY>EXERC.BAT (TO) <EXERCISER>EXERC.BAT

4. SUBMIT EXERC.BAT/TAG:TPTST/UNIQUE:0/TIME:50000

5. AFTER THE PACKAGE BEGINS, IT WILL ISSUE A PLEASE
COMMAND TO THE OPERATOR ASKING HIM TO MOUNT A TAPE
ON A SPECIFIC DRIVE. AFTER THIS HAS BEEN DONE,
FOLLOW THESE STEPS TO CONFIRM THAT THE TAPE HAS BEEN
        MOUNTED:

AT THE CTY, ENSURE THAT YOU ARE CONNECTED TO PTYCON.
THERE MUST BE A PROMPT FROM PTYCON ("PTYCON>") AT
        THE CTY.

        TYPE:
                B-X-$[CR]

WHERE B IS THE LITERAL LETTER "B"
                - IS THE LITERAL CHARACTER "-"
X IS THE SUBJOB NUMBER WHICH WAS SPECIFIED IN
THE REQUEST TO MOUNT THE TAPE.
                $ IS THE ESCAPE CHARACTER
                                                      Page 4

6. TO ENSURE THAT THE TEST IS RUNNING, EXAMINE THE
BATCH INPUT QUEUES FROM TIME TO TIME. A FEW JOBS
WILL BE SUBMITTED BY EXERC. WHEN THE LAST JOB,
EXER1.BAT, HAS RUN, THE DEMO PACKAGE IS OVER.

AT THAT TIME, 2 FILES WILL AUTOMATICALLY BE PRINTED,
ONE OF THEM IN A SOMEWHAT UNUSUAL FORMAT:

        A. ERRORS.LOG

        B. EXERC.LOG THIS FILE WILL BE PRINTED IN
                                "INSTALLMENTS", SEPERATED BY
                                LPTSPL FILE HEADER PAGES.
                                THIS IS BECAUSE OF THE
                                EXTREME SIZE WHICH EXERC.LOG
                                CAN OBTAIN WHEN THE DEMO
                                PACKAGE IS RUN INDEFINATELY.
                                THUS, THE LOG FILE IS
                                CONTINUALLY PRINTED AND THEN
                                DELETED, SO THAT IT NEVER
                                GROWS TOO BIG.

7. YOU MAY EXAMINE THE BATCH INPUT QUEUES FROM THE USER
TERMINAL LOGGED IN AS <EXERCISER> BY TYPING:

                        [CTRL C]

                        [CTRL C]

                        Q[CR]

8. ERRORS DETECTED BY VARIOUS BATCH CONTROL FILES WILL
BE WRITTEN INTO FILES WITH THE EXTENSION ".ERR".
WHEN EXER1.BAT RUNS, ALL OF THESE ERROR FILES ARE
APPENDED TO "ERRORS.LOG". THE FILE "ERRORS.LOG"
WILL BE PRINTED OUT AND SHOULD BE INSPECTED.

THE ONLY ERROR MESSAGES WHICH MIGHT NORMALLY APPEAR
IN ERRORS.LOG ARE THOSE WHICH INDICATE THAT A PIECE
OF UNBUNDLED SOFTWARE, SUCH AS FORTRAN OR COBOL, MAY
BE MISSING FROM THE SYSTEM. THIS SITUATION MAY WELL
BE TRUE IN SOME CUSTOMER INSTALLATIONS, AND IT HAS
BEEN PROVIDED FOR IN THE SYSTEM DEMO PACKAGE, WHICH
WILL STILL RUN CORRECTLY AND PERFORM THE SAME TESTS
        EVEN WITHOUT THESE UNBUNDLED PRODUCTS.

ANY OTHER ERROR MESSAGES MUST BE EXAMINED AND
EXPLAINED ON A CASE BY CASE BASIS. THIS MEANS THAT
THE LOG FILES FOR THE DEMO PACKAGE (WHICH DO NOT
                                                      Page 5

AUTOMATICALLY GET QUEUED TO THE PRINTER) MUST BE
        PRINTED AND EXAMINED.

********WHAT FOLLOWS DOES NOT APPLY FOR CUSTOMER
INSTALLATIONS

1. THE SYSTEM DEMO PACKAGE RUNS AS SEVERAL SEPERATE
CONCURRENT JOB STREAMS. ONE OF THESE WILL CONSIST
OF THE JOB EXERC.BAT, WHICH WILL RUN INDEFINITELY IF
        THE  ENTIRE  DEMO  PACKAGE  IS  TO RUN INDEFINITELY;
OTHERWISE IT WILL RUN JUST ONCE. THE OTHERS CONSIST
OF EXECUTIONS OF THE JOBS WHICH EXERC.BAT SUBMITS,
INCLUDING OPTIONALLY, THE JOB WHICH RUNS THE
        USER-MODE DIAGNOSTICS.

2. THE SOURCE FILES FOR THE SYSTEM DEMO PACKAGE PORTION

THE AREA <DIAGNOSTICS> MUST HAVE A USER GROUP NUMBER
OF 100 AND A DIRECTORY GROUP NUMBER OF 100, AS DO
        THE AREAS <EXERCISER> AND <EXERCISER-LIBRARY>.
