.HEADER LEVEL 1 Introduction
This beware file contains important information
about TOPS-10 CUSPs
that are being shipped with the 7.04 release of TOPS-10.
This file should be read before installing any CUSPs mentioned herein.
.HL1 BOOT
BOOT Version 4 must be used to load Version 7.04 of the monitor.
It has been made available on Autopatch tapes
in addition to being included on the standard distribution tapes.
Previous versions of BOOT may not be used
to bootstrap monitors later than 7.03.
The new BOOT will successfully load a 7.03 or later monitor.
Therefore, you should ensure that a copy of the new BOOT
has been placed on your front end file system.
When this is done,
no special drop-back procedures will be necessary
with respect to BOOT.
.HL1 DECmail
MX now works correctly with non-DECnet versions of TOPS-10.
Therefore MXL.EXE has not been shipped.
.HL1 New GALAXY Version 5.1
This version of GALAXY will run under 7.03 and 7.04 with no changes.
.HL2 New Features and Functionality
This new GALAXY replaces the GALAXY Version 5.1
which was released with TOPS-10 Version 7.03,
and provides some new features and enhancements
that are intended to optimize the efficiency
of DECsystem-10 site operations and management.
These enhancements are:
.ls
.le;Bug fixes in almost all areas of GALAXY,
to correct deficiencies that were reported since the last release.
.le;NEBULA supports the new Digital
DQS protocol as well as the old one.
.le;New GALAXY startup procedure and spooler operation.
QUASAR now starts all other GALAXY components
that it requires only when they are needed.
At QUASAR startup, PULSAR, ORION, and CATLOG
are started by QUASAR.
QUASAR also waits indefinitely for ACTDAE to start.
The rest of the components (LPTSPL, BATCON, FAL, etc.)
are started only when they are needed or
as specified in the PRCDAT macro in QSRMAC.
Some spoolers will log out after "n" minutes of idleness
("n" can be set in GALGEN) and
others will log out after all streams have been shut down.
.le;Merged MOUNT and QUEUE.
The MOUNT-class commands ALLOCATE, DEALLOCATE,
DISMOUNT, MOUNT, and SHOW QUEUE/SHOW ALLOCATION
now invoke the QUEUE program instead of MOUNT.
This change allows all the user-level interfacing
with GALAXY to be made through a single program.
All MOUNT-class commands work as they did previously.
In addition, SWITCH.INI is now supported for MOUNT-class commands.
.le;New LCP commands.
Two new commands have been added to LCP --
SHOW HOST-INITIATED-REQUESTS and SHOW PENDING-REQUESTS.
They show information about the current state
of any host-initiated LAT connect requests that may be outstanding.
.le;Improvements to CATLOG.
The CATLOG program now maintains the structure, magtape, and DECtape catalogs
in a single RMS indexed file named CATLOG.SYS.
A conversion program, CATCNV,
will read the existing STRLST.SYS, MTALST.SYS, and DTALST.SYS files
and create the initial CATLOG.SYS file.
.els
.HL2 Installing New GALAXY
In general, the installation of GALAXY has not changed.
However, two steps must be performed before starting the new GALAXY:
.list
.list element;System catalog conversion
.list element;Editing SYS:SYSJOB.INI
.end list
.hl3 System Catalog Conversion
CATLOG now uses a single RMS indexed file, CATLOG.SYS,
to hold the structure, magtape, and DECtape catalogs.
The CATCNV program must be run
to read the STRLST.SYS, MTALST.SYS, and DTALST.SYS files
and create the CATLOG.SYS file.
To run CATCNV:
.list
.list element;Log in as PPN [1,2].
.list element;Run the CATCNV program from the CUSP tape area.
If the CUSP tape had been restored on structure DSKB,
for example, then type
.blank
.indent+9;RUN DSKB:CATCNV[10,7,CATLOG]
.list element;When the program finishes,
the CATLOG.SYS file will be built in SSL:[1,4].
.end list
.hl3 Editing SYS:SYSJOB.INI
SYSJOB.INI must be changed to reflect
the new GALAXY startup procedure.
Because QUASAR uses FRCLIN to start its components,
it cannot begin to do this until INITIA has finished reading SYSJOB.INI.
Therefore none of the other GALAXY components will appear
until FRCLIN becomes free.
Note: ORION will start NML if DECnet is present in the monitor.
A sample SYSJOB.INI is shown below:

.HL2 GALAXY and TOPS-10 Versions 7.04, 7.03, and 7.02
The new GALAXY requires no modifications to run under 7.03.
However, unpredictable behavior will result if it is run under 7.02.
The 7.02 fallback code HAS BEEN REMOVED and running this new version
of GALAXY under TOPS-10 7.02 is NOT supported.
.HL2 Known Bugs and Deficiencies
.ls
.le;NEBULA will sometimes crash during error recovery.
This will be fixed in a future Autopatch tape.
.le;Modifying the queue name or destination node
of a DQS request in the queue does not work.
This is a temporary restriction and
will be fixed in a future Autopatch tape.
.le;FAL and IBMSPL, defined as "start command" spoolers,
do not log out after all streams have been shutdown.
This will be corrected on a future Autopatch tape.
.le
Programs using GALAXY software may report
.SKIP 1.INDENT 5;%Use STOPCD macro for stopcode XXX instead of $STOP
.SKIP 1
during assembly.
The $STOP macro will work as before but it is advised
that the sources of your program be changed
to use the new STOPCD macro.
The new STOPCD macro uses minimal GLXLIB resources.

.HEADER LEVEL 1 LOGIN/LOGOUT
The traditional LOGOUT functionality is now provided
by the LOGIN CUSP.
Programs which currently do RUN UUOs to LOGOUT will continue to work,
but these programs should be modified to run LOGIN.
Until such modifications can be made,
the 7.04 version of LOGIN can be copied to LOGOUT.EXE.
In addition, the old LOGOUT CUSP is being distributed
on the Customer-Supported Tools tape with the name GLXLGO.MAC.
.SKIP 1
The 7.04 version of LOGIN will
run successfully under 7.03 monitors,
eliminating the need for any special drop-back procedures.
.HEADER LEVEL 1 Utilities Which Do Not Support Long Symbols
The overlay handler, GLOB, and MAKLIB
do not support long-id .REL blocks generated by FORTRAN.
There are no plans to modify these programs to provide such support.
.SKIP 1
MACRO does not support long symbol names.
Therefore, the names of MACRO subroutines called
from a FORTRAN program cannot be longer than six characters.
.HEADER LEVEL 1 RSX20F
The CUSP tape contains the TOPS-10 Version 7.04 release
of the RSX20F front-end software
for both 1090 (DECtape) and 1091/1095 (Floppy) based systems.
This software, comprising Version VA16-00
(for 1090's) and VE16-00 (for 1091/1095's)
includes the following fixes and enhancements:
.list
.le;All known PCOs to RSX20F on TOPS-20 have been applied
and tested on TOPS-10.
.le;A problem with reading and processing the last card
in a deck with CD20 card readers has been fixed.
.le;A problem where in some cases the name of the microcode recorded
in KLI's configuration file became corrupted has been fixed.
.le;The serial numbers of all disk drives visible
to the front end's RH11 disk controller are now passed
to the Monitor at system startup.
.els
.SKIP 1
In addition, this version of RSX20F comes with a new, simplified, and
automated installation procedure.
This new procedure, called RSXINS, allows you
to install RSX20F on your system in five minutes or less.
To support RSXINS, two tools are included: F11 and FELOAD.
.SKIP 1
F11 is a TOPS-10 program that allows a privileged user to manipulate
the FE.SYS file on a disk pack.
It provides commands that allow the reading and writing
of files in the area as well as the creation
and deletion of the FE.SYS file itself.
In addition, F11 can write a binary PDP-11 formatted file
into the boot blocks of a disk.
All of these features are used by the RSXINS procedure.
.SKIP 1
FELOAD is a PDP-11 program that serves as the new primary bootstrap
for RSX20F.
It is written into the boot blocks by F11 as a part
of the RSXINS installation procedure.
.SKIP 1
The RSX20F files reside in a number of subdirectories,
organized as follows:

It is imperative that the subdirectory structure be maintained,
as the FLOPPY and DECTAP directories contain identically-named files.
.SKIP 1
You may wish to print out and read the files
SIGC8.MEM and SIGXD.MEM in the RSX20F subdirectory.
They contain the chapters from the forthcoming
^&TOPS-10 Software Installation Guide\&
that describe both the use of the RSXINS procedure
and also the method for creating bootable front-end media
for the new software.
.HEADER LEVEL 1 ORION (LCP)
Users with local modifications must rebuild
with the 7.04 ORION (LCP).
ORION will give errors with the 7.04 monitor
if the 7.04 ORION software is not used.
.HEADER LEVEL 1 TWICE
The TWICE functionality is now an integral part
of the monitor,
and the TWICE program is now obsolete.
Please refer to the monitor beware file for more information.
.HEADER LEVEL 1 DECnet CUSPs
The following DECnet CUSPs have been moved from the DECnet tape
to the CUSP tape: CTHNRT, FAL, NFT, and NIPGEN.
