THESE ARE INSTRUCTIONS FOR USING THE DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS
PROGRAM 'DESTAT*'. THIS PROGRAM ANALYZES A SET OF OBSERVA-
TIONS ON ONE VARIABLE. OUTPUT CONSISTS OF SUMMARY STATISTICS,
AND (OPTIONALLY) THE FOLLOWING: ORDER STATISTICS, FREQUENCY
AND CUMULATIVE DISTRIBUTIONS, DATA ARRANGED IN ASCENDING ORDER.
THE PROGRAM WILL ASK WHETHER THESE ARE WANTED, AT RUN TIME.
THE USER CAN CONTROL THE CLASS INTERVAL USED FOR THE FREQUENCY
DISTRIBUTIONS, BY SPECIFYING ANY TYPICAL CLASS INTERVAL. THIS
IS DONE BY SUPPLYING TWO NUMBERS, THE LOWER AND UPPER LIMITS OF
THE TYPICAL CLASS. IF NO TYPICAL INTERVAL IS SPECIFIED, THE
PROGRAM WILL CHOOSE AN APPROPRIATE NUMBER OF CLASSES (USING
STURGES' RULE) AND GENERATE CONVENIENT CLASS LIMITS AND A CLASS
WIDTH ACCORDINGLY. DESTAT* PROVIDES AS PART OF THE ORDER STAT-
ISTICS OUTPUT THE MAIN PERCENTILES OF THE DISTRIBUTION, BUT THE
USER CAN OBTAIN AS PRINTOUT ANY OTHER PERCENTILES DESIRED BY
ENTERING THEM AS INTEGERS (E.G., 70 FOR THE SEVENTIETH PERCENT-
ILE.). TO USE THE PROGRAM, TYPE THE FOLLOWING:

200 DATA X(1), X(2),...., X(N) (THE VARIATES TO BE DESCRIBED)
(DATA MAY BE CONTINUED ON LINES 201-398)
   400 DATA L, U (A TYPICAL CLASS, L=LOWER LIMIT, U=UPPER)
   500 DATA P1, P2, .... (ADDITIONAL PERCENTILES DESIRED)
   RUN

NOTE: DESTAT* COUNTS THE NUMBER OF VARIATES SUPPLIED. LINES 400
AND 500 ARE EACH OPTIONAL INPUT. NOTE ALSO: FOR A LARGE NUMBER
OF VARIATES, THE SORT TIME IS THE MAJOR CONTRIBUTOR TO RUNNING
TIME, HENCE THE FULL OUTPUT OF THE PROGRAM IS PRINTED AFTER
THE SORT IS COMPLETED.
