1.0  SUMMARY

FTP, FTPSER and FTSCTL are programs which allow users to transfer files
over the ARPANET.  FTP is the user half of the File Transfer Protocol.
FTPSER and FTSCTL are the server half of the File Transfer Protocol.

FTP version 4(30), FTPSER version 4(2) and  FTSCTL  version  4(1)  run
only on Release 4 of TOPS-20AN.

FTP depends on there being a File  Transfer  Protocol  server  at  the
remote site.



2.0  EXTERNAL CHANGES

The CWD command now accepts directory names  instead  of  user  names.
This  change  was necessary to provide access to structures other than
PS:.



3.0  KNOWN BUGS AND DEFICIENCIES

None as of March, 1979.



4.0  INSTALLATION AND BUILD INSTRUCTIONS


4.1  Files Needed to Run FTP

FTP consists of the files, FTP.EXE, FTPSER.EXE and FTSCTL.EXE.


4.2  Instructions for Loading and Installing FTP

Mount the  tape  labeled  QT010  on  MTA0:   and  type  the  following
commands:

     R DUMPER
     TAPE MTA0:
     REWIND
     DENSITY 1600-BPI
     SKIP 1
     RESTORE <*>FTPSER.EXE (TO) <SYSTEM>*.*.-1
     RESTORE <*>FT*.EXE (TO) SYS:*.*.-1
     REWIND

4.3  Files Needed to Build FTP

     FTP.MAC
     FTPSER.MAC
     FTSCTL.MAC

In addition, the following files must be in SYS:

     MACSYM.UNV
     MONSYM.UNV


4.4  Instructions for Building FTP

Mount the  tape  labeled  QT010  on  MTA0:   and  type  the  following
commands:

     R DUMPER
     TAPE MTA0:
     REWIND
     DENSITY 1600-BPI
     SKIP 3
     RESTORE <*>*.*.* (TO) <SELF>*.*.*
     REWIND
     ^C
     SUBMIT FTP.CTL/UNIQ:0/REST


4.5  Special Considerations

Before other sites can successfully FTP files to your  site  over  the
ARPANET,  FTSCTL  must be running.  Ordinarily, this system program is
started automatically by SYSJOB.



5.0  INTERNAL CHANGES

Refer to FTP.TCO, for detailed information of changes to FTP.
