RMS20.DOC -- Information for V1.1(60)
February 1983

1.0 SUMMARY

This is Release 1.1 of RMS-10/20. It is a Record Management System
that supports stream, sequential, relative, and multi-key ISAM files.
The components of RMS-10/20 are as follows:

        RMS the run-time system of RMS-10/20
        RMSUTL  RMS file manipulation utility

RMS-20 requires release 4 or greater of TOPS-20. RMS requires version
12B of COBOL-74 or version 2.1 of BASIC-PLUS-TWO.

The relevant documentation is as follows:

        COBOL-74 Language Manual, Appendix I

2.0 EXTERNAL CHANGES -- N/A

3.0 KNOWN BUGS AND DEFICIENCIES

     1. RMSUTL does not handle stream, sequential, or relative files.

     2. Only multi-key ISAM files can be accessed from COBOL. OPEN
         statements for RMS files may not contain the ALLOWING clause.

     3. RMSUTL does not have facilities to display or change packed
         decimal or double integer fields.

     4. If certain prologue fields are clobbered, RMS will abort
         opening of a file. There are no facilities in RMSUTL to
         "quick open" a file. Thus it is not possible to "unclobber"
         fields like ORG with RMSUTL.

     5. If disk quota is exceeded, RMS will signal the user to
         EXPUNGE files and CONTINUE. This message may not be sent to
         the operator when the problem occurs in a batch job.

4.0 INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

The following files should be copied to SYS: --

      o  RMS.EXE -- Standalone RMS;

      o  RMSCOB.EXE -- RMS configured for use from COBOL;

      o  RMSUTL.EXE -- RMS file maintenance tool;

      o RMS.REL -- RMS for use with COBOL programs compiled /R.

If you wish to put RMS into a test directory first, copy these files
to that directory and define SYS: to search there.

The following files should be copied to the AUTOPATCH directory:

      o  RMS2S1.REL -- The RMS AUTOPATCH library;

      o  RMS2U1.REL -- The RMSUTL AUTOPATCH library;

      o  RMS2P1.REL -- The command processor for RMSUTL;

      o  RMS2S1.LNK -- LINK command file to rebuild RMS.EXE;

      o  RMS2C1.LNK -- LINK command file to rebuild RMSCOB.EXE;

      o  RMS2U1.LNK -- LINK command file to rebuild RMSUTL.EXE;

      o  RMS20.CTL -- control file to rebuild the RMS system;

      o  B362LB.REL -- BLISS-36 library routines referenced in RMS.

Copy RMS20.DOC to a documentation directory.

5.0 INTERNAL CHANGES

   [53] Correct typo which made a global reference local, causing RMS
         to write upon a (formerly) sharable page.

   [54] Bucket compressor not updating status flags correctly.

   [55]  Incorrect data bucket may be  searched  during  3-way  split;
         use different search routine to fetch bucket first.

   [56]  Reserved to DEC.

   [57] Bug in $UPDATE code retained unneeded buffers.

   [60]  Reserved to DEC.

6.0 SUGGESTIONS

None.
