Notes for RUNOFF, version 1(125)
January 8, 1981
This file describes recent changes and all known deficiencies in DEC
Standard Runoff.
1.0 CHANGES
o The following features first appear in version 1(125).
Two new commands were added: KEEP and NO KEEP. NO KEEP is the
default, and represents current behavior. KEEP says to keep empty
records in nofill mode. Thus, with KEEP asserted, nofill mode acts
exactly like literal mode, except that DSR flags are honored.
o [Version 1(125)] Two new Runoff commands were added: AUTOJUSTIFY
and NO AUTOJUSTIFY. AUTOJUSTIFY is the default, and represents
current behavior. NO AUTOJUSTIFY says: Do not turn justifying on
again after each .hl, .chapter, .appendix, and .standard.
o [Version 1(125)] Two new Runoff commands were added: XUPPER and
XLOWER. XUPPER is the default, and represents current behavior.
XLOWER says: do not change the case of index / entry commands and
index-flagged entries.
o [Version 1(125)] .NFL now means "no flags," not (only) "no flags
all," in accordance with the User's Guide.
o [Version 1(125)] .NO NUMBER does not affect running page numbers.
o [Version 1(125)] There are 6 new arguments to the .STYLE HEADERS
command, allowing the user to give many particulars to shape headers
as desired. The 6 new arguments are as follows. (In the following
list, "below" refers to header levels of lower order, and thus
higher number. "Above" refers to headers of higher order, and thus
lower number.)
n4: The header level at (and below) which heads will not be
numbered. Default = 7.
n5: The header level at (and below) which non-run-in heads will be
centered. Default = 7.
n6: The number of blank lines before heads. Default = 2.
n7: The number of blank lines after heads. Default = 1.
n8: The "implied test-page" number of lines to keep together for
heads. Default = 7 + (paragraph test-page).
n9: The number of spaces between a head number and the title (75
maximum). Default = 2.
[For reference, the first three arguments to .STHL -- which did
not change -- are given below.]
n1: The header level at (and below) which heads will be run-in.
Default = 3.
n2: The header level at (and above) which header text will be raised
to all-cap. Default = 1.
n3: The header level at (and below) which header text will be made
cap-and-lower-case. Default = 2.
o This feature first appears in version 1(123).
The SEND TOC command does not interpret flags within the text being
sent to the table of contents. Thus it is possible to send
flag-pairs for emphasis (bolding or underlining) via SEND TOC.
Version 1(23) of the TOC utility additionally allows you to control
whether or not emphasis that is included in header, chapter, and
appendix titles will be effective in the table of contents.
o This feature first appears in version 1(117).
You can now control the number of blank lines generated by the .END
LIST and .END NOTE commands. These commands now take an (optional)
number; if you don't give a number you get the old behavior, so
existing documents are not influenced at all. (Defaults are .END
LIST 1 and .END NOTE 2.)
The number that you specify can be any value that is acceptable to a
.SKIP command, negative included; the meaning is the same. Zero is
also acceptable, which means to skip no blank lines.
2.0 KNOWN BUGS AND DEFICIENCIES
o 029 In all VAX/VMS versions of RUNOFF. (TOPS-10 and TOPS-20
versions don't have this bug.)
If you say /UNDERLINE:SEPARATE or /UNDERLINE:NONSPACING you can't
specify the character to be used in underlining as well, and
conversely.
o 021 Found in 1(101) of RUNOFF. The bug is transportable. If you
say /SEQUENCE, the input page number and line number for an
"auto'ed" subtitle are sometimes 0 (i.e., zero).
o 002 This bug appears in TOPS-10 and TOPS-20 versions.
If you say RUN RUNOFF, and you then supply it with no file to
process, you need two ^Zs to get back to monitor level rather than
one. Ditto with the /EXIT switch.
o 001 The following sequence generates an internal logic error:
.center ^&(tab)(tab)(tab)\&
Note that any additional character other than (tab) between the ^&
and \& causes the internal logic error to go away.
