BEWARE INFORMATION FOR GALAXY-10-V702
BEWARE INFORMATION FOR EDIT 430 IN PULSAR
PULSAR will occasionally fail to correctly read labeled tapes
written by versions prior to 4(421). This is due mainly to the
unpredictable behavior of earlier versions of PULSAR;
specifically their inability to write HDR labels and/or to
position around tape marks correctly while writing these labels.
Errors are reported as usual, to OPR. The most common will be
"File sequence errors". To get around this problem, edit 430
gives the operator three options:
ABORT: Abort the request and return positioning error to
the user's program.
PROCEED: Try to ignore the error and let the tape I/O
happen. This is not recommended, as using it
could sacrifice data security. See below.
RETRY: Retry the search for the sequence number in
question.
We suggest that users owning tapes with sequence errors should
rewrite those tapes with good data. We will make no attempt to
automatically allow bad formatted tapes to be processed. To do
so could defeat the security mechanisms normally afforded by
labeled tapes. Do not SPR this behavior as a problem, as
version 4(440) will be correctly detecting these errors.
