1.0 INTRODUCTION
This beware file contains important information about TOPS-10 CUSPs
that are being shipped with TOPS-10 Autopatch Tape 18. This file
should be read before installing any CUSPs mentioned herein.
2.0 NEW GALAXY VERSION 5.1
A new GALAXY, Version 5.1, is being distributed with this Autopatch
tape. This version of GALAXY will run under 7.03 and 7.04 with no
changes.
2.1 New Features And Functionality
This new GALAXY replaces the GALAXY Version 5.1 which was released
with TOPS-10 version 7.03, and provides some new features and
enhancements that are intended to optimize the efficiency of
DECsystem-10 site operations and management. These enhancements are:
1. Bug fixes in almost all areas of GALAXY, to correct
deficiencies that were reported since the last release.
2. NEBULA supports the new Digital VAX/DQS protocol as well as
the old "unsupported" DQS.
3. New GALAXY startup procedure and spooler operation. QUASAR
now starts all other GALAXY components that it requires only
when they are needed. At QUASAR startup, PULSAR, ORION, and
CATLOG are started by QUASAR via FRCLIN commands. QUASAR
also waits indefinitely for ACTDAE to start. The rest of the
components (LPTSPL, BATCON, FAL, etc.) are started via FRCLIN
only when they are needed or as specified in the PRCDAT macro
in QSRMAC. Some spoolers will log out after "n" minutes
of idleness ("n" can be set in GALGEN) and others will log
out after all streams have been shut down. Hopefully in the
near future, OPR commands will exist to better control the
new spooler behavior. Also, ORION will start NML if the
monitor is built with DECnet.
4. Merged MOUNT and QUEUE. The MOUNT-class commands ALLOCATE,
DEALLOCATE, DISMOUNT, MOUNT, and SHOW QUEUE/SHOW ALLOCATION
now invoke the QUEUE program instead of MOUNT. This change
allows all the user-level interfacing with GALAXY to be made
through a single program. All MOUNT-class commands work as
they did previously. In addition, SWITCH.INI is now
supported for MOUNT-class commands. Note: Under 7.03, QUEUE
will not be invoked for MOUNT-class commands because the
monitor's command tables are set to run MOUNT. The new QUEUE
will still function properly when run under 7.03.

5. New LCP commands. Two new commands have been added to LCP --
SHOW HOST-INITIATED-REQUESTS and SHOW PENDING-REQUESTS. They
show information about the current state of any
host-initiated LAT connect requests that may be outstanding.
2.2 Installing New GALAXY
2.2.1 SYSJOB.INI - The installation of GALAXY has not changed, but
SYSJOB.INI must be changed to reflect the new GALAXY startup
procedure. Because QUASAR uses FRCLIN to start its components, it
cannot begin to do this until INITIA is finished reading SYSJOB.INI.
Therefore none of the other GALAXY components will appear until FRCLIN
becomes free. A sample SYSJOB.INI is shown below:

LOG
ACTDAE

LOG ;GALAXY JOBS
QUASAR

2.2.2 LOGMAX Vs JOBMAX - Because free job slots must be available for
QUASAR to start spoolers at various times, it is recommended that
LOGMAX not be set equal to JOBMAX. Depending on the devices used at
the site and required spoolers, a LOGMAX of 5 or 6 less than JOBMAX
should be sufficient.
2.3 GALAXY And TOPS-10 Versions 7.04, 7.03, And 7.02
As mentioned before, this new version of GALAXY is being shipped to
7.04 Field test sites. The official release will be via Autopatch
tape 18 and an up-to-date version will also be sent on the 7.04
distribution tape. The new GALAXY requires no modifications to run
under 7.03. However, unpredictable behavior will result if it is run
under 7.02. The 7.02 fallback code HAS BEEN REMOVED and running this
new version of GALAXY under TOPS-10 7.02 is NOT supported.

2.3.1 Known Bugs And Deficiencies - As of Autopatch Tape 18:
1. The QUEUE and QUASAR as supplied with this Autopatch tape
must be installed together. There have been list output
related changes made in each program that make them dependent
on each other.
2. NEBULA will sometimes crash during error recovery. This will
be fixed as soon as possible. Also, the NEBULA/QUASAR
interface needs improvement and major changes may result.
3. FAL and IBMSPL, defined as "start command" spoolers, do not
log out after all streams have been shutdown as of yet.
4. Programs using GALAXY software may report %Use STOPCD macro
for stopcode XXX instead of $STOP during assembly. The $STOP
macro will work as before but it is advised that the sources
of your program be changed to use the new STOPCD macro. The
new STOPCD macro uses minimal GLXLIB resources.
